Focuses on climate change—from thawing permafrost in the Arctic, to deforestation in Indonesia and Brazil, to changing agricultural practices in the United States—because it is the greatest threat to human and natural systems. WHRC is concerned with land-based carbon, where the risk of its release threatens to cause climatic and societal disruption. WHRC investigates the causes and effects of climate change around the world to identify opportunities for conservation, restoration, and economic development. In conjunction with its research activities, the organization supports environmental education and various conservation projects. In addition, WHRC scientists produce models and maps for assessing threats to a safe climate and publish results in peer-reviewed journals, where their findings are available to inform policy decisions.
